Shoulder and Back Scoring Areas

With the high-speed action of Judo, the Referee must instantly determine if the throw’s landing included Uke’s back or side and if so, how much.

We’ll review the scoring criteria for both Ippon and Wazari scores in the next several sections, but first, it’s helpful to understand areas that constitute the Shoulders, Upper back, Middle back,  Lower back and side.
